Ep. 31: Don't Hoard the Hand Sanitizer

Announcer (00:02):

You're listening to the Content Heroes podcast where entrepreneurs, marketers, and creatives share how they build profitable businesses on their own terms by creating content online. And now your host, Josiah Goff.

Josiah (00:18):

Welcome to the Content Heroes, everyone. We're back with another Friday edition of the show. And today we're going to be talking about what everybody is talking about right now. That's the coronavirus. Now you're probably thinking that's kind of a strange topic for this show because you know we're not a health show, we're not a news show. We are a podcast for content creators, right? But here's the thing, there's something going on in the world right now and whether directly or indirectly at this point, it's affecting all of us. And so I really think that it's important that we take a step back and we say, you know, as business owners, especially online business owners, how do we respond? How do we respond and engage to the pandemic that's happening right now? I think one of the most tempting things to do is to retreat, is to kind of batten down the hatches and wait for this thing to ride over and hope that it doesn't affect us too much. But I think that that's a mistake besides the fact that it's the right thing to do. People are going to remember when you show up and when you show up and surprise them and show up in a way that they don't expect, they remember that. And so it's important when we can to set aside the bottom line for a moment and just ask the question, how can I serve people? So that's what has been on my mind this past week is how do I as a business owner, an online business owner, engage in what's going on in the world right now? So we're going to talk about the wrong way to do it and the right way to do it. And so the wrong way, which I implore you to not do this is don't hoard the hand sanitizer. And here's what I mean by this. There is a person, you've probably seen them on the news, they're actually from my town, Chattanooga, Tennessee. They went around and bought up all of the hand sanitizer that they could find, all the surrounding areas, just raided the stores and bought up almost 18,000 bottles of hand sanitizer. Just a turnaround and try to sell it for a profit and price gouge online. That is the wrong way. And I know that that's an extreme example, but I've also seen a lot of just kind of sleazy marketing and sales messaging targeting the very understandable fears and reactions that people are having to this and twisting it to try to turn it into something that they can sell. And in the long run that doesn't help anybody, that doesn't help you and it definitely doesn't help the people that you're talking to. So instead I encourage you to be like my friend Shane Sams. So Shane, who is the co-founder with his wife, Jocelyn of Flipped Lifestyle. He had a really interesting idea. Instead of withdrawing and retreating and waiting for all of this to pass over, he engaged with what's going on. He started to ask the question, okay, what am I seeing? What needs am I seeing in the world and how can I serve? Even if it's kind of out of the norm, even if it's something that might seem simple, how can I do something to lift people up? And so one of the things that he noticed was that a lot of events were getting canceled specifically in kind of our online marketing world. A lot of conferences and things like that were either getting postponed or canceled altogether and there wasn't really anything replacing that. And so he decided, hey, since everyone's plans are canceled, everyone's going to be sitting at home, we're all kind of missing out on that community, on the networking, on the relationship building and on the things that we were going to learn at these events. Why don't we just put together an event of our own and instead of, you know, charging hundreds or thousands of dollars for tickets, he just made it free. And everyone who is speaking is doing it for free. And we're just putting something of value in to help all of us make it through this and come out as well as we can on the other side. And so he jokingly called it the quarantine conference and that I think that's kind of stuck. So he's put that together and I believe we've got over 50 guests coming on. It's just an online summit and I'm one of the people who's going to be speaking, and I'll be talking about how to optimize your WordPress site to speed it up so that you can get more traffic and more conversions. But he has a ton of amazing guests coming on. All people who saw what he was doing wanted to be a part and volunteered their time with no expectation of anything in return, just wanting to help however we can. So we'll link to that in the show notes and I encourage you to sign up and be a part. And you can join anytime. I think he's also putting recordings on YouTube and that sort of thing. But it's basically a live watch party where he'll get on probably like a zoom call or something and with a guest and we'll just teach something or talk about things of value. And so it's going to be a great time. Shane is awesome and I'm so grateful to him for putting this together because it's something that we need right now. And so I just encourage you to think about that. And what are you seeing in the world? How can you contribute? I mean, one of the reasons why we become content creators and business owners is we're creating our own platform, right? We do it because we want to see some kind of change in the world. So if we're not going to show up when something like this is going on, then what's the point? What's the point of building all of this if we're not going to use it for good? So you could do your own online summit. If you have a network of people that you want to bring together to teach others, you could organize some sort of online event for, to raise money for local food banks. You know, there's so many things that we could be doing right now that can help. And like I said, the people who are showing up are the ones who are going to be remembered and the ones who are building something for change, the ones who are making an impact. So I like to invite you all to come to Shane's quarantine conference. It's going to be a blast. And then also I talked about this on the last Friday episode. This wasn't planned as part of a response to the coronavirus pandemic originally, but I'm also putting on an event called Show up and Write. So you can go back to Episode 28 to listen to me explain it a little bit more detail where that idea came from and why we're doing it. But basically a lot of the feedback that I've gotten from you guys in the Content Heroes' audience just has been that a big struggle is having difficulty getting off the ground or being consistent because that's what it takes to be a content hero is to consistently show up. And so I asked myself, how can I serve all of you in whatever way that I can to help with that? And that's where this event was born. And so basically we're just going to get together in a virtual room, on a zoom call or something like that. And you'll come with an idea or something that you've been working on, that maybe you're stuck on or whatever. And we'll do a quick warmup exercise and then I'll set a timer for 45 minutes and we will all just sit down and write a nonstop because I've found that if you just take action and you just get something started, then pretty quickly things start to calm and you start to get unstuck and get out of that, creative funk that you've been in. And that's what I want to help foster and do it in a community setting because there's something about that energy and that accountability and honestly just kind of giving ourselves an excuse how to actually sit down and do the thing and take action on it. That's so, so powerful. And so that's going to be a great thing. And then at the end we're going to celebrate how many words we've written and this is also completely free event and we don't have a date or time set yet. We're working on that. And part of that is just kind of determining what's the best time and day based on the people who are interested. So if you're interested, go to contentheroes.com/showup and that'll take you to a short form where you just give us your info and your ideal times and when you would want to do this sort of thing. And we'll kind of take all of that and figure out the best time to have the event. So I invite all of you to come and do that and it's going to be a blast. Once again, that URL is contentheroes.com/showup. We'll put that in the show notes as well. And to all of you who are being directly impacted by what's going on in the world right now, just know that you have people who want to help and that we're here for you. And so if there's one thing that I've learned from this, this whole ordeal, it's that the, we're so much more dependent and reliant on each other in this world than most of us realize, and now's the time to come together and be there for each other. So that's all for now. I wish you all the best. Until next time, go be a hero everyone.
